General DNA Testing FAQs
No. If you do not live in New York a DNA test can be taken without a doctor’s prescription or authorization to test from a lawyer or officer of the court, however, if you do live in New York only legal DNA tests are allowed with very specific chain of custody requirements – no at home testing is permitted. The New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) only allows labs with a clinical laboratory permit from the NYSDOH to examine specimens at the request of licensed physicians or other persons authorized by law in their practice or in the performance of their official duties. New York is the only state that requires this so at home DNA testing can be done anywhere else.
No. Taking drugs does not alter the composition of your DNA and will not affect the test results.

Simply complete the online order form which is very easy to fill out. Just answer the questions asked on the order form and it walks you right through it. Additionally you can call 1-800-883-0265 during regular business hours to speak to one of our Genetic Consultants who can answer any questions you may have.
In situations where the parent in question is missing or deceased there are several testing options that are available.
Viability testing of either a tissue sample or stored blood of the missing/deceased parent is one option that is possible. (This type of sample usually comes from a coroner’s or medical examiner’s office.) If usable DNA is found in the sample a relationship DNA test can be done with the usable DNA.
If no biological samples from the missing or deceased parent are available then a grandparent, sibling or avuncular DNA test is another way to determine paternity or maternity.
DNA Test Results FAQs
Once all of the tested parties’ samples have been sent in and received by our lab, for relationship testing you can expect to get your test results within 1 business day after all samples are received by the lab (2 business days for non-standard samples). DNA testing for Healthy Weight is 30 working days for test results. Updates on your case progress will be posted to your private online client portal, which you can access using your private password that you create at the time of your order.
We deliver your DNA test results to you via a secure online portal. You can access your private test results page with the username (which is your email address) and password you created at the time of your order on your order form. We use this method of delivering your results to protect your privacy as this prevents someone who is not authorized from viewing your results.
Our DNA test results will show you:
- The allele sizes of the different DNA markers examined and used in the statistical analysis portion of the test (i.e. the DNA profile)
- A Probability of Paternity/Relationship Value
- A Combined Paternity/Relationship Index (CPI/CRI)Value
The Probability of Relationship is the result you are looking for. In a paternity test a result of 0% means there is no biological relationship; a result of 99.99% or higher means the alleged father is confirmed as the biological father and for other relationship tests such as sibling, grandparent and avuncular DNA tests, 90.9% or higher indicates a biological relationship. The CPI/CRI value represents the odds against another random, untested person in the population having the same results as the person being tested. We also tell you in plain English what the results mean such as “paternity confirmed” or “excluded as the biological father” for example.
Sorry. No. There is no way to verify who we are speaking to on the phone so to protect the privacy of the person who ordered the test we cannot provide results over the phone. To ensure the confidentiality of the testing the results can only be accessed via the private online portal with the password the ordering party created at the time of the order. If there are questions concerning the results please complete a Support Ticket on our website and a Genetic Consultant will get back to you usually within 24 hours or sooner.
Pricing and Payment FAQs
Paternity, relationship and infidelity DNA testing are not considered to be medically necessary tests so they are not usually covered by insurance or Medicaid. Also, generally, DNA testing for weight loss and healthy skin are usually considered cosmetic procedures and not medically necessary procedures but you would need to check with your insurance provider regarding if there is coverage for those tests or not.
We understand that every situation is different and our DNA test pricing depends on the type of DNA test being performed and the number of people being tested. Please click on the Order a DNA Test link from the menu bar above and select the type of test you are interested in to view our test fees.
We accept the following forms of payment:
- American Express
- Debit Cards (With a Visa/Mastercard logo)
- Gift Cards (With a Visa/Mastercard logo)

These are good questions. An even better question is why is the test pricing of other companies so high? DNA Testing Experts believes our clients deserve the answers our tests can provide them without emptying out their savings. We use only 24 marker testing rather than the industry standard 16 marker so we can provide the most accurate results possible. All of our DNA tests are performed in an AABB accredited laboratory. We offer the highest quality testing for the lowest price and we look forward to helping you get the answers you need and deserve.
DNA Sample Collection FAQs
You have 90 days to collect and return your samples from the time you place your DNA test order. If the testing parties are in different locations both parties should collect and return their samples to our lab within 30 days of one another.
Yes, we do split testing all the time. It is not a problem testing parties who live in different cities or even different countries. Each DNA testing kit is assigned a specific case number. When we send the test kits to the separate addresses each test kit has the same case number on it so when the lab receives all the samples from each party they know which case the samples belongs to. When ordering online simply select the option of two or more kits (depending on the number of people testing) on the order form and enter the additional name and address in the box that will automatically show when this selection is made.
Collecting your DNA sample is very simple and easy to do. We include easy to understand step-by-step instructions in our DNA test kits on how to collect cheek cell samples using the buccal swabs provided in your kit. You can also watch a video that shows you exactly how to collect your DNA. Click here to view
You do not need to have a lab collect your sample. You can easily collect your own DNA sample yourself and can do this for all of the DNA tests we offer except for legal tests which require a Certified DNA Collector and have strict chain of custody requirements.
Your DNA composition is the same throughout your body. Cheek cells have the same genetic DNA profile as blood does and will produce the exact same test results. Buccal swabbing is our collection method of choice because it is a simple and painless procedure that you can easily do on yourself. Having blood drawn is more costly and unnecessary. Also, mouth swabs are more preferable than blood samples for individuals who have recently had either a blood transfusion or a bone marrow transplant as their blood may contain DNA from the donors which could possibly cause false test results.
Legal DNA Tests FAQs
All legal DNA tests are required to be performed in an AABB accredited lab and follow a strict chain of custody protocol in order to hold up in court. All of our DNA testing is done in an AABB accredited laboratory and the labs strictly adhere to the chain of custody procedure to ensure our legal DNA testing results are legally defensible. Our legal DNA testing can be used for legal purposes such as child custody, child support, immigration, Social Security benefit claims, inheritance claims and more.
DNA Testing Experts follows a strict chain of custody protocol for our legal DNA tests and all of our DNA testing is done in an AABB accredited laboratory, which makes our legal DNA tests defensible in courts and other government agencies. Our legal DNA test results can be used in a wide variety of legal cases such as obtaining child support or custody and for other important legal purposes such as validating claims for Social Security benefits or inheritances, DNA proof of dependency for IRS tax forms, adoption and birth certificates and other legal matters.
The chain of custody process is what makes DNA Testing Experts’ legal DNA test results legally defensible in courts and other government agencies. It has three main requirements that need to be met:
- The persons being tested have to be properly identified when their samples are collected. (Their government-issued IDs are verified and photocopied.)
- The samples are collected by a Certified DNA Collector who is a neutral third party – someone who has no personal outcome in the results of the test.
- The samples are tamper-taped, securely packaged at the collection site and carefully inspected upon receipt for any evidence of tampering.
When these requirements are met and documented a DNA test’s results are legally defensible. This means that the test results can be used for legal purposes such as child custody, child support, proof of dependency for tax forms, inheritance issues and more.
About DNA Testing Experts
All of our DNA testing is done in an AABB and CLIA accredited laboratory regardless if it is a home test or a legal DNA test to meet the highest standard of testing on all our tests. You can learn more about accreditation for DNA testing here.
We have several labs around the country and worldwide that we use depending on the type of testing being performed. Each of our facilities specializes in particular tests and are specialists in their field of expertise. This enables us to process your test results more quickly.
DNA testing is the kind of service that calls for privacy and discretion much of the time. Honest review sites that offer real reviews and not paid advertising reviews require each person posting a review to use their real name and email address and of course details about how the test affected their personal situation. This kind of information requested may be a breach of privacy for many clients who require discretion and confidentiality.
DNA Testing Experts does not change any names or details of the persons writing a review or testimonial. Any testimonials or reviews on our site are genuine, honest and not paid for or created to make our company look more credible. We use the real names of the persons tested and each person has given permission have their testimonial or review posted on our site.
Our test results have changed thousands of lives and that is enough. We will always guard our client’s privacy and never ask them to put their personal details about their life out to the public.
DNA collection sites are only needed for legal DNA tests so that the chain of custody requirements can be met. We have an extensive network of Certified DNA Collectors throughout the United States and Canada and other countries around the world. If you ordered a legal DNA test a list of Certified DNA Collectors near you will be provided in your test kit based on your zip code.
